Is it a 4 cylinder? If so, it is expensive but it might be an option to swap the motor for the motor found in the 98 Dodge Avenger ES. The cars have identical interiors and strikingly similar bodies, and the mitsubishi eclipse has a mitsu body with a GM motor, while the Avenger has a GM body with a mitsu motor. The engine bay should be the same size, if not close to the same, so may a swap with the v6 from the avenger ES would work.

Without spending any serious money.
1. Empty out any extra weight.that means any junk in the trunk, lol.
2. Fill your gas only halfway
3. Use higher octane gas if your car is meant for it
That is it.

Do a full tune up on it. Change oil, spark plugs and cables. Add a fuel cleaner to it seafoam works great. This should help with acceleration and overall performance of your vehicle.

You might need new spark plus and wires..that will slow it down, air filter (is your clogged or really dirty)?

Although if your engine is the 420a, then unless you do some performance mods, being some sort of forced induction or nitrous, the car will never be fast.

To start with, if ur Eclipse is a GS or an RS that is unmodified, sure, it sucks. It gets to 60 from 0 in 9.2 sec brand new. Older, chances r it has slowed down even more. A good tune up & regular maintenance should improve & keep the car running better for a longer time. Higher octane may help but will only be a waste of ur money since the engine only requires regular. Minor mods can also bump ur horsepower a little. Headers, cat-back, high flow muffler, air intakes, upgraded ECU r some easy mods u can do to increase horsepower. Do not expect an Evo performance though 'coz it aint gonna happen. For that, u may need to turbo it up, bigger bore, etc., etc. Prepare to spend a lot of money if u really r in need of speed! Good luck!!!

Get a tune up.change all the fluid and plugs and put higher octane gas in it.Kind of need more info on the car to tell you anymore.Is it turbo? How many miles does it have on it? When was the last time it had a tune up?

you migth want to go tune it that would probably help but first change any other thing that might be old in ur car then go tuuune it. my husband has a 95 eclipse and he remodel everything cause it wasnt working that good and went to tune it and was duing fine then .
